Study Says Twitter “Doubled Visibility” of Hunter Biden Story By Censoring It

The “Streisand Effect” is a hell of a thing. For those who don’t know, the “Streisand Effect” is an internet phenomenon named after singer Barbra Streisand who tried, quite unsuccessfully, to get a picture of her Malibu house removed from the internet in 2003. Streisand’s efforts were publicized, leading to far wider distribution of the photo. The moral of the story: When something is online, it’s online for good. Attempts to censor, hide, or ban it will only result in (far) more people hearing about it looking into it for themselves.

And so we come to Twitter.

“When Twitter banned, and then unbanned, links to a questionably sourced New York Post article about Joe Biden’s son Hunter, its stated intention was to prevent people from spreading harmful false material as America heads into the final stretch of the election campaign,” MIT’s Technology Review reported Monday. “But thanks to the cycle of misinformation—and claims from conservatives that social-media platforms are deliberately censoring their views—Twitter managed to do the opposite of what it intended.”

Not sure what “misinformation” MIT is referring to, but their bias isn’t the important part of the story. The important thing is that Twitter’s efforts to conceal this story resulted in just the opposite: Suddenly, whether or not people believed there was something “to” the Hunter Biden emails, the social media network had given conservatives a real story to sink their teeth into: The unwarranted censorship of a respected news outlet.

“According to Zignal Labs, a media intelligence firm, shares of the Post article ‘nearly doubled’ after Twitter started suppressing it,” MIT wrote. “Zignal found a surge of shares immediately after Twitter instituted the block, jumping from about 5.5 thousand shares every 15 minutes to about 10 thousand. This doesn’t necessarily mean the block caused the explosion in interest, but the surge corresponds with a series of widely shared tweets from Trump supporters and conservatives accusing the platform of political censorship.”

Hell, instead of hauling Twitter’s board of directors before Congress, conservatives should pray that the site continues to censor news it decides is “unfit” for their users. It is apparently the single most effective way to make anti-Democrat news go viral!
