In an appearance on MSNBC, Politico reporter Tara Palmeri said that, contrary to what many in the media want to believe, Donald Trump’s grip on his base has only strengthened since leaving office. Palmeri said that Republican elected officials will ignore this truth at their own peril…as polls indicate may be the case for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), whose support has cratered since voting to impeach the former president.

“People don’t want to hear anything against Trump,” Palmeri said Friday. “Actually, the more he stays out of the media, the more that he becomes this martyr, this looming figure over the GOP.”
Palmeri said, for example, that Trump is “way more popular” than Cheney in her home state. She came to this conclusion as she reported on a Wyoming anti-Trump rally last week.
“I actually went out of my way to try to find someone who would defend her and I really could not,” Palmeri said. “She didn’t have that much name recognition, considering she’s a Cheney. I mean, I said her name at a hardware store, and someone shouted a threat.”
That sounds hilarious, actually.
Palmeri said that the main impression she got talking to voters was that they didn’t consider Cheney’s impeachment vote to be in line with what her constituents wanted…and that “therefore she has to go.”
Just to make sure MSNBC viewers didn’t get the impression that she actually condoned these views, Palmeri then went on a rather insulting rant about people in Cheyenne not wearing masks, being skeptical of the COVID vaccine, and questioning the results of the 2020 election. In other words, the types of people that regular MSNBC viewers would consider rubes. And if those are the types of people that Cheney angered with her impeachment vote, well, that just says it all, right?

“I hate that they’re so distrustful,” Palmeri said. “It feels like another world but that’s what’s on the ground and I don’t think that we can ignore it and I’m really happy that I went out there and saw it because I think that there’s a huge disconnect between Washington and the rest of the country.”
Yeah, well, you can say that again. Also: If you’re wondering why those people are “distrustful,” you might find a clue in the last four years of MSNBC programming.
