Democrat and House Majority Whip James Clyburn claimed that President Donald Trump signals the “end of Democracy,” as he accuses the administration of implementing tactics similar to the feared Nazi police, known as the Gestapo.
In an interview with CNN’s News Day, the lawmaker responded to the federal police presence in Portland, who were dispatched to de-escalate weeks of political unrest. Clyburn said, “I would really like to know who ordered those people to be there. The way I understand things, it seems that somebody had to be deputized by the attorney general, or some order from him, to do what they were doing.”

Clyburn believed that federal officials should not interfere when it comes to responding to local incidents and that communities should be left to decide whether they would need federal help. He claimed that if the local community wanted more support, that would be the only time for them to “intercede.”
The lawmaker lamented how federal law enforcement officers were unwanted in Portland and how they had suddenly shown up without warning from the governor or local authorities. He also questioned why officers had “their faces covered” as they drove around in “unmarked cars.” Clyburn then accused Trump as well as Attorney General William Barr from “doing everything they possibly can to impose Gestapo activities in local communities.” He then concluded that such activities signal “ the beginning of the ending of this democracy.”

Portland Mayor, Mayor Ted Wheeler, also claimed that the federal police presence is not a welcome sight in their community and wanted them “to leave.” Other Democrats chimed in. In a Twitter post, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the situation to another Nazi law enforcement authority, the “Storm Troopers.” Pelosi claimed that Trump had sent a “secret police” that was meant to terrorize Americans.
The House Speaker then declared that Americans should not tolerate being used as pawns to Trump’s “political games” and vowed that they would immediately curb the president’s “abuse of power.”

Recently, the Customs and Border Protection’s Border Patrol Tactical Unit, and the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group were sent to protect federal property from vandals and anarchists after suspects ripped and desecrated statues of American Presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
According to the Oregon Public Broadcasting, the media outlet accused federal officials from driving in unmarked vans as they drove off and detained civilians without any valid explanation. They also accused the president of using such tactics to end the political protests that have lasted for more than six weeks.

On Tuesday, officers had to set off gas and projectiles as hundreds of protesters gathered at the Portland courthouse entrance. Some had even torn off the plywood that was protecting the building as an hour-long confrontation ensues.
However, The President was having none of it and praised the federal law enforcement officials for doing a “fantastic job” in curbing the political unrest. Trump also believes that people wanted the federal government to take charge and make their communities safe.
