President Trump Calls for “Orderly Transition” of Power

In the wee hours of the morning on January 7th, Congress certified the results of the Electoral College vote, cementing Joe Biden’s status as the man who will become the 46th President of the United States. After a chaotic day in which a few thousand of the president’s rallygoers stormed the Capitol Building to make their feelings known about the state of the election, the objections slated to take place in the halls of the House and the Senate largely disintegrated.

In a statement a little before 4:00 in the morning, Vice President Mike Pence officially confirmed Biden’s victory.

In remarks on Twitter and on the floor of the Senate, Republican majority leader Mitch McConnell characterized the certification as an act of defiance against those “who tried to disrupt our democracy.”

“The United States and the Senate will not be intimidated,” he tweeted. “We are back at our posts. We will discharge our duty under the Constitution for our nation. And we are going to do it tonight.”

Not long after the certification was made complete, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted a Twitter message from President Trump.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” the statement read. “I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

So there. Now everyone has it in writing, and we can stop all the handwringing about the dictatorial ambitions Trump has to overthrow democracy and take over the world. From the outset, Trump’s sole goal was to make sure that this election went down fairly, constitutionally, and in accordance with state and federal laws. There are still significant doubts as to whether those goals were ever met, but now that Congress has spoken and the Supreme Court has decided to stay out of it, there are no further avenues for challenge. For better or for worse (and we sincerely doubt it’s for the better), Biden will be the next president.

What happened at the Capitol on Wednesday was nothing for anyone to be proud of, but let’s stop pretending that it happened in a vacuum, or that it happened solely because Donald Trump instigated it. When BLM and Antifa were destroying cities, the left had no end to the excuses – hundreds of years of racism, the pandemic, George Floyd, police misconduct, and, yes, Donald Trump were just a few of them. Now, we’re suddenly shocked by a political protest that gets out of hand?

If the only lesson learned after Wednesday was “Trump is bad,” then we’ve got some dark days ahead of us.
