In a shocking report from Oregon Public Broadcasting, the media outlet alleged that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler had taken into consideration the option to ask law enforcement authorities to stand down against protesters and watch them as they continued to wreak havoc and destruction across the city.
According to the OPB, Wheeler had considered the suggestion to leave public buildings and landmarks at the hands of rioters as a strategy to de-escalate the situation. The report cites that during the height of the Portland riots in July, rioters have targeted the federal courthouse. As a way to resolve this, Wheeler messaged an aide and instructed those police officers should turn a blind eye against demonstrators.

However, Wheeler changed his mind as the rioters moved into residential neighborhoods. He said, “I was persuaded that a complete withdrawal, even for one evening to test the ability to completely deescalate the situation, would be a risk that was too great.” He continued that he cannot put Portland residents at risk.
At the end of the month, federal officers from the Department of Homeland Security had struck a deal with the state’s Governor Kate Brown to turn over the control and handling of the riots. Eventually, the riots dried out in the downtown area, however, things became worse as protesters moved into the city’s east side. The change of location made Wheeler more concerned about asking the police to stand down.
Since July, residents are at the end of the rope as they had to deal with late-night riots, the constant threat of violence, while protestors shine laser lights, and had even tried to burn down the city’s police building which was located in the residential neighborhood. On a report from The Patriot Hill, rioters had even gathered into the residential streets to demand homeowners to provide shelter, in exchange for the service that they did for the community.
Armed and complete with helmets and protective gear, rioters also brought in a guillotine, and publicly decapitated a teddy bear in the middle of the streets, which some believed was an effigy of the Portland mayor. The rioters burned down the stuffed toy along with the American flag. Worse, some of the demonstrators threw feces and urine against law enforcement authorities after a riot broke out.

However, Wheeler continued to consider the stand-down order. In response to police inaction, Wheeler claimed that he is “‘considering all options” and that his end goal is to ensure that he could create “‘safe spaces” for people to protest.
In fact, Wheeler himself had a first-hand account of the protests. In an effort to show that he had championed people’s rights, Wheeler tried to join the riots. However, instead of receiving praise, he was booed as protesters demanded his resignation. He was also caught in the receiving end of a violent exchange between rioters and law enforcement authorities.
