According to him, social media platforms are dangerous for democracy and they serve the purpose of foreign powers.

Speaking on Thursday, Obama stated the current era is a “dangerous moment in history,” as he tied social media to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Furthermore, he stated people like Putin know they can attack American democracy by disseminating misinformation on social media platforms.
The former president believes people find themselves in chaos when they see too much information on social media and can end up believing the wrong things.
In addition to that, Obama noted our social media platforms are designed in a way that moves the country in the wrong direction and the Russian president knows this.

As social media platforms now dominate the internet, most of the problems faced by Americans are the result of this new technology, Obama added.
While Obama continued mentioning Russian interference in the 2016 election, he forgot to mention recent investigations that have unlinked Trump from Russia.
All the investigations until now are establishing the Hillary Clinton campaign cooked a conspiracy to launch a smear campaign against Trump.
This comes at a time when major social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, are discriminating against conservative narratives.
For instance, Facebook algorithms downplayed Hunter Biden’s business controversies and provided undue visibility to Democrats after the 2020 elections.
Former President Donald Trump was banned from both of these platforms for voicing his concerns regarding the integrity of the vote in the 2020 election.
Similarly, when Elon Musk made a bid of $43 billion to buy Twitter, most leftist commentators scolded him for using money to buy the platform.
As Musk wanted to protect freedom of speech, and hence democracy on social media platforms, Democrats believed they would lose the pro-left management of Twitter, which acts as their mouthpiece more often than not.
Obama Hypocritically Calls For Social Media Scrutiny
Although Obama did not suggest too specific measures to counter this so-called disinformation campaign, he hinted at how America can stop this overreach by social media platforms.
While presenting solutions, he pointed toward the European Initiative of the Digital Markets Act, alongside revamping Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
This section helps social media companies avoid legal scrutiny for the content published by any random user.

All of these suggestions came from the mouth of the same person who oversaw the rise of big tech in the first place.
