Letitia James, the Democratic attorney general of New York, is at it again.

On Monday, she announced her office has officially sued the Trump Organization so that it complies with subpoenas that have been issued. The subpoenas are in relation to an investigation as to whether President Donald Trump and his company inflated the value of assets on financial statements.

The investigation has been ongoing since Michael Cohen, Trump’s one-time personal attorney, testified to Congress that the president deflated and inflated his net worth multiple times to either get more favorable loan terms or to obtain benefits on taxes.

James said in a statement:

“I took action to force the Trump Organization, and specifically EVP Eric Trump, to comply with my office’s ongoing investigation into its financial dealings. For months, the Trump Organization has failed to fully comply with our subpoenas in this investigation.

“We are seeking thousands of documents and testimony from multiple witnesses regarding several Trump Organization properties and transactions, including from Eric Trump, who was intimately involved in one or more transactions under review.

“The Trump Organization has stalled, withheld documents, and instructed witnesses, including Eric Trump, to refuse to answer questions under oath. That’s why we filed a motion to compel the Trump Organization to comply with our lawful subpoenas for documents and testimony.”

James said that Eric Trump agreed to be deposed on July 22, but then refused, “balking less than two days before he was scheduled by agreement to give testimony.”

In justifying his decision not to testify as part of the investigation, a lawyer for Eric Trump said was invoking “those rights afforded to every individual under the Constitution.”

Despite what seems like a serious matter, the Trump Organization downplayed Monday’s news. The chief legal officer for the organization, Alan Garten, said:

“There has been no lawsuit filed by the NY Attorney General. This is simply a discovery dispute over documents and the like. As the motion papers clearly state, the NY AG has made no determination that anything was improper or that any action is forthcoming. We will respond to this motion as appropriate.”

Some members of the Trump Organization have already given their testimony to James’ office. Its CFO, Allen Wisselberg, did so in July. Sheri Dillon, a long-time tax attorney for the president, also did so. James, however, said Dillon wouldn’t answer some of their questions.

Some of the properties that are part of the investigation include 40 Wall Street, Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles, Seven Springs Estate in Westchester County New York, and Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago.

James’ office isn’t the only one that’s seeking information on the president and the Trump Organization. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office, led by Cy Vance, is also seeking subpoenas of the president’s financial records.

On Monday, though, Vance announced he would hold back on a subpoena while an appeals court was analyzing the case at hand.
