It’s been an open secret for months that, from officials in Wuhan all the way to the top of the Chinese Communist Party, China engaged in a systematic cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak in the early weeks of the spread. While this was a horrendous abdication of responsibility under the presumed theory of the case – that this disease emerged from a seafood market that was practicing unsanitary food handling – new evidence has come to light that make this an even darker story.

According to U.S. government officials, it is now believed that the virus may have come not from a wet market but from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. If confirmed, that would make this a much different scenario.
CNN reports:
US intelligence and national security officials say the United States government is looking into the possibility that the novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory rather than a market, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who caution it is premature to draw any conclusions.

An intelligence official familiar with the government analysis said a theory US intelligence officials are investigating is that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and was accidentally released to the public. Other sources told CNN that US intelligence hasn’t been able to corroborate the theory but is trying to discern whether someone was infected in the lab through an accident or poor handling of materials and may have then infected others.
It has been known for weeks that some of the people first exposed to COVID-19 had never been within blocks of the seafood market supposedly at the epicenter of the outbreak. It has also been known that the Wuhan lab studied animal coronaviruses. But now, with cables emerging from 2018, which show that U.S. embassy officials warned Washington that the safety and training protocols at the Institute of Virology were well below a competent level, experts are beginning to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
Asked about the embassy cables this week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “The Chinese Communist Party didn’t give Americans access when we needed it in that most timely point at the very beginning. Then we know they have this lab. We know about the wet markets. We know that the virus itself did originate in Wuhan. So all those things come together. There’s still a lot we don’t know, and this is what the President was talking about today. We need to know answers to these things.”
If it turns out that this virus did escape from the lab, that changes the game entirely. As it stands now, Beijing has some degree of plausible deniability when it comes to their early proclamations that the virus was not spreading person-to-person. But if it came from the lab, they knew damn well what it was right from the start. They knew that they had another epidemic of SARS on their hands, and they did everything in their power to cover it up.
