"But when it comes to the political and the standard of dignity that we want to maintain for the public in the United States Congress, I do believe it is in- in the best interests," Ocasio-Cortez declared.

Fox News reported that Menendez is accused of getting gold bars and other valuables in exchange for helping the Egyptian government.

The scheme is said to have included his wife, Nadine Menendez, along with New Jersey real estate developer Fred Daibes, businessman Jose Uribe, and halal meat certification specialist Wael Hana.

"Menendez also improperly advised and pressured an official at the United States Department of Agriculture for the purpose of protecting a business monopoly granted to Hana by Egypt and used in part to fund the bribes being paid to Menendez through Nadine Menendez," the indictment was quoted as saying.
