Liberal pundits are getting increasingly confident in their calls for social media – particularly Twitter – to ban President Donald Trump and take away his single-biggest mode of communication with his supporters. Apparently worried that Trump’s insistence that something went wrong in the 2020 election might actually cause people to doubt that an unprecedented number of Americans voted for one of the least-inspiring, least exciting Democrats to come along in decades, pundits and journalists are ready to start chipping away at the free speech of the leader of the free world.

“Nearly every tweet from the president at this point is labeled for misinfo,” reported CNN’s Oliver Darcy this week. “Which had me thinking: Why doesn’t Twitter just take the step of labeling his entire account as a known source of election disinfo? And why stop there? Why not label accounts that repeatedly spread claims the platform has to fact-check?”
That’s funny, because the situation has got us thinking as well. Thinking that it’s high time that conservatives (and really, anyone who wants a platform for free speech) leave sites like Twitter behind for friendlier ground. If that means Parler, fine. If it means a new site, great. But to hand all of our online communications power to these censorious and leftist companies is a form of madness.
We digress.
The point is, lackeys on CNN are far from alone in their zeal to see Trump removed from social media. In November, former Reddit CEO Ellen Pao and Laura Gomez of Project Include wrote an open letter to Twitter chief Jack Dorsey, imploring him to shut down the president’s account.
“Donald Trump is attempting a coup. And he’s running it through Twitter,” the pair wrote. “Yes, we know you’ve been flagging him, but flagging doesn’t help — it attracts more attention and more engagement. One flagged tweet has almost half a million likes and retweets. How many millions of people saw the tweet and believed it? We are writing to request that, in response to President Donald Trump’s repeated violations of Twitter’s Civic Integrity Policy, that you suspend his account.”
The movement to silence Trump has also garnered support on Capitol Hill. Recently, Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) claimed that Trump was “posting lies and misinformation at a breathtaking clip” on Twitter and that his account “should be suspended until all the votes are counted.”
And if you think that all of this energy to get rid of Trump’s Twitter will go away after the election news has died down, think again. One look at Reddit’s r/politics is enough to show you thousands of pundits, users, and leftist commentators who are hoping that – the moment Trump is no longer president – that Twitter will ban him entirely from the site.
