Joe Biden Slaps Back at “Condescending, Elitist” Elizabeth Warren

Last week, angry at having the obvious flaws in her Medicare-for-All plan pointed out by her challenger for the Democratic nomination, Elizabeth Warren hinted that anyone repeating “Republican talking points” is “running in the wrong primary.”

Biden took exception to that remark – so much so that he penned a whole piece at Medium.com defending his stance, defending his credentials as a Democrat, and taking some pointed shots at Warren and the other far-left progressives in the race.

“I have fought for the Democratic party my whole career. I know what we stand for, who we stand with and what we believe. And it’s not just policies or issues. It’s in my bones. That’s not something everyone in this primary can say,” Biden wrote.

Biden said that while it was “kind of funny” that anyone might suggest he’s not a true Democrat, “at another level these kinds of attacks are a serious problem.”

“They reflect an angry unyielding viewpoint that has crept into our politics. If someone doesn’t agree with you — it’s not just that you disagree — that person must be a coward or corrupt or a small thinker,” he continued. “Some call it the ‘my way or the highway’ approach to politics. But it’s worse than that. It’s condescending to the millions of Democrats who have a different view.

“It’s representative of an elitism that working and middle class people do not share: ‘We know best; you know nothing’. ‘If you were only as smart as I am you would agree with me.’ This is no way to get anything done. This is no way to bring the country together. This is no way for this party to beat Donald Trump,” he said.

While Biden has proven to be a master at saying things that sound reasonable and “let’s all get along”-ish throughout the campaign, his characterization of Warren as “condescending” and “elitist” is no mistake. This is one of the Massachusetts senator’s prime weaknesses. She is viewed as a professorial know-it-all who looks down with contempt on anyone who disagrees with her “I’ve got a plan for that” strategy to win the Democratic nomination. That plays beautifully among the liberal intelligentsia, the academic world, and on The Rachel Maddow Show. It doesn’t play all that well in the working-class Midwest, which Democrats must take back if they want to win next year’s election. Biden’s method of attack is gentle on the surface, but it’s got hidden teeth.

Will it be effective? Well, that remains to be seen. As much as Joe Biden would like to believe that he still represents the mainstream of the Democratic Party, there’s no denying that they have pulled sharp left since the not-so-long-ago days of Barack Obama. And they’re only growing more extreme by the minute. Biden’s still in the lead…but there’s a long way to go till Iowa.
