Homeowners Mocked and Shamed for Arming Themselves Against Law-Breaking Mob

St. Louis lawyers Mark and Patricia McCloskey became the subject of endless online mockery and shame this week after they took the apparently-wrong approach to defending themselves against an out-of-control “protest” mob running wild through their private neighborhood. Leftist sympathizers and meme-makers had a field day with the couple, who had the temerity to arm themselves with a rifle and a handgun when they saw their gated community overrun with unhinged Black Lives Matter protesters who were on their way to harass Mayor Lyda Krewson.

“Private property!” Mark McCloskey shouted at the crowd as they passed by his expansive property. “Get out! Private property, get out!”

Critics of the McCloskeys have resorted to lies and distortions to paint the couple as “Karen” and “Ken,” the very personification of white privilege.

They claim that the protesters were on the public roads and had every right to be there. This is incorrect; they were on private property.

They claim that the protesters entered this property peacefully. This is incorrect; the gate guarding the community was destroyed, as is clearly evidence by photographs.

They claim that the McCloskeys had no reason to be afraid. Well, this is hard to disprove as it’s really just an opinion, but we’d say that a month’s worth of videos showing what BLM activists are capable of certainly is an argument in the other direction.

Police also confirmed that the protesters were not peacefully marching to the mayor’s house.

“The group began yelling obscenities and threats of harm to both victims,” police said. “When the victims observed multiple subjects who were armed, they then armed themselves and contacted police.”

In an interview with KMOV 4 in St. Louis, Mark McCloskey said it was impossible to know what the crowd had in mind.

“It was like the storming of the Bastille, the gate came down and a large crowd of angry, aggressive people poured through,” McCloskey said. “I was terrified that we’d be murdered within seconds. Our house would be burned down, our pets would be killed. One fellow standing right in front of me pulled out two pistol magazines, clicked them together and said you’re next. That was the first death threat we got that night.”

Apparently eager to mitigate the backlash, the McCloskeys went out of their way, through their lawyer, to appease the BLM movement.

“The Black Lives Matters movement is here to stay, it is the right message, and it is about time,” said Albert S. Watkins, a lawyer for the McCloskeys. “The McCloskeys want to make sure no one thinks less of BLM, its message and the means it is employing to get its message out because of the actions of a few white individuals who tarnished a peaceful protest.”

Okay, that’s a little bit goofy, but we get it. They didn’t ask to become targets of national scorn overnight; they just wanted to protect themselves and their home. Throwing this sort of “I’m one of the good guys” bone at progressive thugs never works, but we understand the impulse.

Bizarrely, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is actually toying with the idea of prosecuting the McCloskeys.

“I am alarmed at the events that occurred over the weekend, where peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault. We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated,” Gardner tweeted.

Uh, when you smash into private property and brandish threats and weapons, you’re not peacefully protesting, and you are well outside the boundaries of your “rights.”

Angry mobs are being celebrated and defensive homeowners are being vilified. We are sliding into absolute madness in this country.
