On Monday, Google flew right past Twitter, Facebook, and every other social media site in the world to take one of the most stunning and unacceptable strikes against conservative free speech that we’ve seen to date. The tech giant, which is responsible for a ridiculously-large percentage of the traffic that flows through the internet, has an extraordinary responsibility to uphold the values of free speech and the First Amendment, even if they have no legal obligation to do so. By forcing ZeroHedge and The Federalist off their ad network because of wrongthink, they have made it clear that being on the “right side” of racial activism is far more important to them than maintaining stewardship over a free and open internet.

Now, Google clarified on Tuesday that they did not actually throw The Federalist off their monetization platform after all; they merely warned them that they would do so if they didn’t clean up their comments section. Somehow or another, even though Google itself enjoys protective immunity from anything published on websites they point their search engine to, they can’t extend that benefit-of-the-doubt to conservative sites. Seems like it might be time for Congress to take another look at Section 230 of the Communications Act.
In an email on Monday, Google explained: “We have strict publisher policies that govern the content ads can run on and explicitly prohibit derogatory content that promotes hatred, intolerance, violence or discrimination based on race from monetizing. When a page or site violates our policies, we take action. In this case, we’ve removed both sites’ ability to monetize with Google.”
According to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Google and others “are inadvertently funding through their advertising content that is outright racist in defense of white supremacism and contains conspiracy theories about George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.”
Conspiracy theories like…more black people are shot by police than white people?
Conspiracy theories like…there is a system of racial oppression in America?
Conspiracy theories like…there are “largely peaceful protests” in this country that somehow result in hundreds of police injuries, looted stores, and burned buildings?
No, these are the conspiracy theories perpetrated by the mainstream news media, celebrated by left-wing organizations like Google, and completely unquestioned by anyone on the left. Indeed, these leftists have decided that even asking questions about these obviously-false narratives is akin to engaging in hate speech. There is only room for one opinion, no matter how badly it conflicts with the actual facts.

Google has become a clear and present threat to the First Amendment and the free and open internet. It is (sadly) time for Washington to take action.
