Kentucky GOP Senator Rand Paul and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) director, Dr. Antony Fauci, continued their long-running feud at the Senate hearing on Tuesday as they traded accusations of lying.

Fauci and Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are also likely to encounter questions about whether the United States should bring back COVID health measures, such as wearing masks. This comes as the delta COVID variant continued to spread nationwide.

As Senator Paul questioned Fauci, he stepped close to accusing the epidemiologist of lying to Congress in his previous testimony. He stated that the NIAID never funded any type of gain of function research in China.

Paul said, referring to a paper on research about coronaviruses in Bats, the money from the United States essentially funded the controversial and hazardous research. However, this was strongly objected to by Fauci.

Fauci maintained that he never lied to Congress before, telling Paul “he does not know what he is talking about”

At the Senate hearing, Fauci stated that he never lied at the Congress before, and he has no intentions to retract his statement. He also added that the research Paul is referring to was judged by qualified staff as not being a gain of function.

Fauci also accused Paul, saying that the senator does not know what he is talking about and wants to officially say that.

On the other hand, the Kentucky senator responded by saying that the judgment of the NIH defines what essentially is a gain of function research. He afterward accused Fauci of “dancing around,” accusing the NIAID director of trying to obscure responsibility.

Fauci and Walensky, Biden’s top medical advisers, will appear before the HELP Committee (Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions). In their opening remarks, both of them emphasized the importance of the COVID vaccine in stopping the delta variant.

Fauci mentioned that the vaccines are very effective against the delta variant. Walensky, on the other hand, stated the message coming from the CDC is clear: vaccinations still remain as the most powerful weapon that we have against viruses.

Meanwhile, Fauci also objected to any suggestions that he or the National Institute of Health may be somehow responsible for the coronavirus. Fauci also claimed that the virus created by the gain of function research is “molecularly impossible” to be the origin of COVID-19.

Fauci told Paul that if the senator is implying the gain of function they did is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, he totally “resents” him. Fauci added that if there is anyone lying in the Senate hearing, that is no other than Paul.
