Elizabeth Warren Threatens the State of Israel

If Sen Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. succeeds in toppling President Donald Trump, the state of Israel had best be prepared for a decidedly hostile policy on the part of the United States government.

According to the Hill Newspaper:

When asked what her policy would be regarding Israel’s settlements in the West Bank, Warren replied, “It is the official policy of the United States of America to support a two-state solution, and if Israel is moving in the opposite direction, then everything is on the table.”

Hot Air found the language that Warren choose to use to be stark. “Speaking in Iowa over the weekend, Elizabeth Warren offered what in diplomatic terms would be an ultimatum, one that hints at the use of military force, to demand that Israel, adopt a plan that the Palestinians have never honestly backed in the first place.”

More than one media outlet, including The Washington Free Beacon, noted that the phrase “everything is on the table” is more often used by American presidents when threatening the use of force against a hostile country, say Iran for building nuclear weapons.

On the other hand, Warren seems to have meant that she would consider cutting off military aid to the Jewish state, which would be almost as controversial as a direct, military attack. In effect, Hot Air notes, a President Warren would do to Israel what Trump is accused of doing to the Kurds, abandoning the Jewish state to its enemies.

Also, it has been noted, that considering the Democrats’ criticism of what some regard as the intemperate rhetoric offered by President Trump concerning just about everything, even a hint of a threat of economic action against Israel, not to mention a military strike, is not a good look for Warren. Warren is considered the front runner for the far-left wing of the Democratic Party.

Some observers of foreign policy have noted that the largely bipartisan consensus that Israel is a firm ally of the United States, not only out of strategic interests but also from shared values, has been broken.

The Obama administration pursued a decidedly hostile stance toward Israel, treating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as all but an enemy, while at the same time appeasing the Jewish state’s enemies, such as the payment of hundreds of billions of dollars to Iran in exchange of a nuclear agreement. The nuclear agreement, which alleges to compel Iran to pause in its development of nuclear weapons, has undergone criticism by experts both in Israel and the United States as inherently flawed.

Hot Air notes that Warren’s stance demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Most Israelis would welcome a two-state solution if it meant that peace, at last, would come to the Middle East. The Palestinians, on the other hand, at best regarding a two-state solution as just the first step of a process that would render the region Judenrein, to coin a term first used in Nazi Germany.

Warren has been criticized for hiring an anti-Israel staffer who used to work for an organization named IfNotNow, the Washington Free Beacon noted.

“That staffer, Max Berger, ‘has spread hatred of Israel, protested against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), demonized pro-Israel American Jews, and promoted INN-organized ‘Liberation Seders,’ according to the watchdog website Canary Mission, which documents the activities of anti-Israel activists across the country. “He has also defended anti-Israel agitators and supported the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.”

How Warren’s hostility toward Israel will affect her electoral prospects is unclear. Former Vice President Biden, even though he was part of the Obama administration, is considered a moderate where Middle East policy is concerned.

The same cannot be said about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT. Even though Jewish, Sanders has expressed a similar degree of ire toward Israel. He has not only criticized Jewish settlements on the West Bank but has slammed Israeli treatment of Palestinians whom he calls “demonstrators.” Sanders has called for the end of the Israeli blockade of Gaza, designed to prevent the Hamas ruled region from acquiring missiles that it then fires on Israeli territory.

Trump, on the other hand, has fulfilled the often-made promise to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, and has recognized the Jewish state’s annexation of the Golan Heights. The contrast between Trump on the one hand and Warren or Sanders on the other could not be more different.
