The images transmitted from Capitol Hill on Wednesday were understandably captivating from an American perspective, but U.S. citizens weren’t the only ones watching the scene unfold with varying degrees of concern and condemnation. Global leaders weighed in on the chaos throughout the day, expressing dismay and consternation.

“Shocking scenes in Washington, D.C.,” tweeted NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “The outcome of the democratic election must be respected.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for an end to the madness: “Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.”

“In the eyes of the world, American democracy tonight appears under siege,” tweeted EU leader Borrell Fontelles. “This is an unseen assault on US democracy, its institutions and the rule of law. This is not America. The election results of 3 November must be fully respected.”

Embarrassingly, even not-so-stable states like Ukraine weighed in. Their foreign minister said, “Concerning scenes in Washington, D.C. I’m confident American democracy will overcome this challenge. The rule of law & democratic procedures need to be restored as soon as possible. This is important not only for the U.S., but for Ukraine and the entire democratic world as well.”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was so disturbed by the events in Washington that he said the nation would be making some “changes to our travel advice.”

“This is a difficult time for the United States clearly, they’re a great friend of Australia and they’re one of the world’s greatest democracies,” Morrison continued. “And so, we just, our thoughts are with them and we hope for that peaceful transition to take place.”

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he did not believe that the scenes at the Capitol were indicative of the real America.

“France stands strongly, fervently and resolutely with the American people…And we will not yield to the violence of a few individuals who want to challenge free and fair democratic elections,” he said. “What happened today in Washington DC is not America, definitely. We believe in the strength of our democracies. We believe in the strength of American democracy.”

What a mess.

We’re not going to defend what (an infinitesimally small portion of) Trump supporters did on Wednesday, but this is what happens when our elite “betters” – up to and including the U.S. Supreme Court – dismiss out of hand any concerns about the fairness of the election. And if the only answer these elites have is, “Once Trump is gone, everything will be better,” we’re afraid that they are in for a dismal surprise.
