Not that it comes as any surprise, but Senate Democrats and their allies in the media aren’t even pretending as if they are going to give Amy Coney Barrett a fair reckoning. From the moment President Donald Trump announced the judge as his nominee to the Supreme Court (and let’s face it, even before then), Democrats drew their knives, licked their chops, and immediately descended on this respected judge as if she were the devil incarnate.
Of course, it isn’t Barrett’s associations with the devil that bother Democrats. Quite the opposite.

“What do you think the line of questioning will be about that association?” asked MSNBC “conservative” host Nicolle Wallace in the moments after Trump made the nomination official.
What association was she talking about? Why, Barrett’s closely-cherished Catholic beliefs, of course! To the Democrats and the media, anyone who treats the Christian religion as anything more than something to be paid lip service is immediately suspect, and Barrett makes no secret of her devoutness. To the left, this makes her some sort of weird, “Handmaid’s Tale” type figure, and we mean that literally, as you’ve probably seen.
Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), who already disgraced herself by going after Barrett’s religious beliefs in the judge’s confirmation hearings two years ago, went right back to the well on Saturday, promising that her “closely-held views” would be fair game during the upcoming hearings.
“No big deal, just Senator Mazie Hirono being a religious bigot, questioning whether Amy Coney Barrett can set aside her ‘closely-held views’ as a judge,” tweeted conservative writer Curtis Houck.
In her own statement on the nomination, Senate Judiciary Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein seemed to take exception to the fact that Barrett is as far from the woman she’s replacing as Trump could possibly find.
“President Trump has guaranteed that Judge Barrett will deliver on conservative priorities. In doing so, she would stand as the polar opposite to the vision of America that Justice Ginsburg fought for decades to achieve,” Feinstein tweeted.
Uh, yeah. That’s kinda the point.
Most Democrats, though, simply used the main talking point of the day – that this wholly constitutional, wholly by-the-book Supreme Court nomination process is somehow “illegitimate.”
“I will oppose the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, as I would any nominee proposed as part of this illegitimate sham process, barely one month before an election as Americans are already casting their votes,” wrote Sen. Dick Blumenthal (D-CT).
“1. This entire process is illegitimate,” complained Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR). “2. We knew that anyone on Trump’s list would represent a grave threat to Roe & ACA—including Barrett. Now GOP Senators will have to decide if they are truly willing to take away millions’ rights & health care in the middle of a pandemic.”
“Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court is the product of a corrupt, illegitimate process that undermines the will of the American people,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). “Alongside her dangerous, ultra-conservative record, she’s not fit to serve on the Supreme Court.”

Something tells us that if Trump had nominated a liberal justice in the mold of Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer, or RGB herself, we wouldn’t be hearing a peep about the “illegitimate” nature of this process.
That “something,” of course, is 2016, when all of this was precisely reversed.
