On Thursday, the Federal Regulatory Energy Commission (FERC) issued new guidance for natural gas projects, according to which every project would be allowed to exhale only a specific amount of carbon into the environment.

According to the agency, which is mandated to oversee the interstate transmission of oil, natural gas, and electricity, such structural changes are happening after more than 20 years.

Joe Manchin was quick to reject the latest changes in the regulatory process of natural gas projects.

Calling them “reckless” reforms, Manchin noted that the commission is prioritizing the political agenda instead of working for the well-being of the country.

While emphasizing the importance of the energy independence of the United States, Manchin added that considering the geopolitical and economic conditions of the whole world, it is important that the country does not rely on anyone for energy needs which seems to be the case after the latest reforms come into action.

According to Manchin, this new agenda of the Biden administration would put more roadblocks in the energy sector, which is the last thing the country can afford these days.

Manchin’s response toward the issue raised the eyebrows of Republican lawmakers and industry groups as well. They emphasized that new rules can jeopardize American energy infrastructure and can contribute to energy inflation while undermining national security.

US energy independence is at risk now

Republican Senator John Barrasso, who is also on the Energy and Natural Resource Committee, criticized the new guidelines while calling it “Biden’s war on American energy.”

Barrasso noted that Joe Biden is busy touting about the physical infrastructure of the country, while he is also neglecting the energy infrastructure at the same time.

Likewise, he suggested that the commission would make it impossible for Americans to get their hands on affordable natural gas.

Industry groups also came forward to register their protests against the decision. The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America claimed that the commission had exceeded its authority which would increase uncertainty in the already complex natural gas business.

From now on, the FERC is aiming for “robust consideration” of possible impacts which the proposed natural gas projects can have on the surroundings.

The federal government decided to go this route after the failure of its landmark social spending and climate change bill that was supposed to introduce sweeping changes to achieve so-called clean energy.

As the bill is pushed to a dead-end tunnel, now the administration looks forward toward FERC in implementing its climate policies.

On the other hand, climate activists and Democrats appreciated the efforts of the commission.

Three Democratic members of FERC, including one appointed by Joe Biden, approved these changes, while two Republicans opposed them.
