Last month, after recovering from an intense infection of COVID-19, Detroit’s Karen Whitsett, a Michigan state representative, went on Twitter to praise President Donald Trump for promoting hydroxychloroquine, the very drug that she says helped her recover from the disease. Whitsett’s story might have been in and out of the news except for the fact that she later flew to the White House to meet personally with President Trump.

Oh, and the fact that she’s a Democrat.

State party leaders took a dim view of Whitsett’s praise of Trump. The 13th Congressional District Democratic Party held a 15-delegate vote to officially censure Whitsett and kick her out of the organization.

“We have the ability to be the referee when we see our leaders out there attacking and not being willing to have a discussion to find common ground,” said Chairman Jonathan Kinloch. “Based on her actions and recent statements, she’s chosen to be a stand-alone Democrat with the goals of a Republican.”

The accompanying resolution accused the Detroit Democrat of having “repeatedly and publicly praised the president’s delayed and misguided COVID-19 response efforts in contradiction with the scientifically based and action-oriented response from Michigan’s duly election Democratic leadership … endangering the health, safety and welfare of her constituents, the city of Detroit, and the state of Michigan.”

Now Whitsett is firing back with a lawsuit against the Democratic Party of Michigan and its de facto leader, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. In the federal suit, Whitsett accuses the Democrats of “violations of free speech and defamation.”

In the complaint, Whitsett says that Whitmer texted her shortly after she met with President Trump at the White House.

“You’re entitled to your opinion, I’m just disappointed you’d take your theories public without seeking to get answers first. Take care,” the governor allegedly wrote.

MLive.com reported: “The suit accuses Whitmer of being aware of a conspiracy to publicly shame, defame and humiliate Whitsett. Whitmer did not try to stop the scheme and actually prompted it, making her liable for damages, the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of money for damages, reimbursement for all court fees, lawyers’ fees and other costs related to the case and any further relief the court deems appropriate.”

It’s been a bad month or two to be Gov. Whitmer. Maybe if she would focus more on her duties and less on pretending she’s a child-tyrant of some backwards country, her life would get a lot easier.
