California’s golden dream has turned to ash. Literally. The once-magnificent City of Angels now resembles a dystopian hellscape with rampant homelessness, crime, and the charred remains of what used to be neighborhoods.
Democrats have ruled this state with an iron fist for decades. What do they have to show for it? Businesses fleeing in droves, middle-class families priced out of their homes, and public infrastructure crumbling faster than a Hollywood celebrity’s third marriage.

Nicole Shanahan, billionaire ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is taking matters into her own hands. She’s launching a well-funded recall effort against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass over her catastrophic mishandling of January 2025’s devastating wildfires.
“Shanahan is listed as a major funder of the effort in a disclosure on the campaign’s new website and had previously met with proponents of Bass’ ouster. Opponents of the mayor see her as more vulnerable than ever due to her handling of the January wildfires in Los Angeles, which ignited when she was on a diplomatic trip to Ghana.”
The January 2025 wildfires weren’t just any ordinary disaster. They destroyed over 11,000 homes and claimed 29 lives, making it among the costliest urban fire disasters in recent U.S. history. Where was Mayor Bass during this catastrophe? Enjoying a diplomatic junket in Ghana, thousands of miles away from her burning city.
Adding insult to injury, fire hydrants ran dry as flames engulfed neighborhoods.
Shanahan isn’t just any wealthy donor. She served as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election and boasts a fortune estimated at $1 billion from her divorce settlement with Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
“Nicole Shanahan is dedicated to restoring California to its former greatness and made a generous contribution to help launch this effort,” said Gerald Sirotnak, the lead consultant for the recall campaign.
Unlike career politicians who talk endlessly while accomplishing nothing, Shanahan is putting her money where her mouth is. She’s funding a citizen-led movement to restore accountability to a city government that has utterly failed its residents.
While Shanahan offers solutions, Bass exemplifies the problem. Her response to the wildfire crisis reads like a manual on how not to lead during an emergency. First, she jetted off to Ghana despite warnings of critical fire danger. Then, after the disaster, she fired Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley in February 2025, creating infighting when unity was desperately needed.
“She firmly believes Angelenos have the right to hold Mayor Bass accountable for her failures,” Sirotnak noted about Shanahan’s motivation.
The mayor’s efforts to unite the city around recovery have been overshadowed by high-profile rifts and finger-pointing. Bass has managed to alienate City Council member Monica Rodriguez, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, and the former Fire Chief – hardly the unity leadership the city needs.
Democrats’ environmental policies have also contributed to these fire conditions. Years of mismanaged forests, restrictions on clearing underbrush, and prioritizing climate summits over practical fire prevention all created the perfect storm. Bass was simply following the Democratic playbook – virtue signal globally while your constituents suffer locally.
Recalling Bass won’t be easy. The effort requires collecting approximately 330,000 valid signatures, representing 15% of Los Angeles’ registered voters, within just four months.
Past recalls in L.A. have faced steep obstacles. In 2022, when opponents of then-District Attorney George Gascón handed in 26% more signatures than required, the county disqualified 27% of the signatures. The Democratic machine protects its own with the efficiency they never apply to actual governance.

Bass’s term ends in 2026, but Angelenos shouldn’t have to endure more years of incompetent leadership. As actor Mel Gibson, President Trump’s appointed “Special Ambassador to Hollywood,” bluntly stated: “Gov. Newsom and Karen Bass let us all down. California was ill-prepared and had scant resources to deal with the inevitable fires. They knew that.”
Of course, Bass supporters are already dismissing the recall as a “right-wing political stunt.” It’s the standard Democratic playbook – when you can’t defend your failures, blame Republicans. Meanwhile, the ashes of thousands of homes tell the real story of Democratic leadership priorities.
