Well, it doesn’t get much more ironic than this. In a scenario that seems ripped from the pages of The Babylon Bee, the Minneapolis City Council is reportedly confused and confounded as to why the Minneapolis Police Department isn’t doing more to keep the city from devolving into crime and chaos. This is the same city council, mind you, that voted to abolish the police department entirely in the days after George Floyd’s death in May.
According to MPR News, this week’s city council meeting was focused on reports of “street racing which sometimes results in crashes, brazen daylight carjackings, robberies, assaults, and shootings.”

“The number of reported violent crimes, like assaults, robberies and homicides are up compared to 2019, according to MPD crime data,” reported the outlet. “More people have been killed in the city in the first nine months of 2020 than were slain in all of last year. Property crimes, like burglaries and auto thefts, are also up. Incidents of arson have increased 55 percent over the total at this point in 2019.”
The Democrats on the council questioned Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, insisting that their constituents are baffled over the lack of policing in their community.
“Residents are asking, ‘Where are the police’?” said city council member Jamal Osman. “That is the only public safety option they have at the moment: MPD. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen.”
Amazing.
Osman was joined by City Council President Lisa Bender, who was not only in charge of leading the council to that original vote to abolish the department this summer but also told CNN that worrying about who would answer your burglary call in the middle of the night was the kind of question that could only come from “a place of privilege.”
But at the meeting this week, Bender complained that police are being defiant.
“This is not new,” Bender said. “But it is very concerning in the current context.”
Of the sitting councilmembers, only Phillipe Cunningham appeared to notice the rank hypocrisy and irony.
“What I am sort of flabbergasted by right now is colleagues, who a very short time ago were calling for abolition, are now suggesting we should be putting more resources and funding into MPD,” he said.

Yeah, it is flabbergasting, to use that word. We could also use words like “infuriating,” “rage-inducing,” and “blood-boiling.”
Whatever you call it, though, it’s a damn good argument against ever electing another Democrat to any political position higher than dogcatcher in Minneapolis…or anywhere else, for that matter.
