The crisis at the Southern border shows no signs of slowing down; the number of migrants and seizures of the deadly fentanyl continue to rise.

After taking office in January, the Biden administration is now contending with an overwhelming surge of migrants at the border and the numbers keep going up.

A massive increase of migrant encounters compared to the same time last year

In May alone, there were over 180,000 migrant encounters. This is another spike in numbers compared to the 178,000 in April and a sharp increase from the 78,000 encounters in January.

The 180,000 encounters in May is a massive increase from the 23,000 apprehensions at the same time last year. However, the Biden administration noted that 112,302 migrants, (mostly single adults) were expelled under Title 42 public health restriction in relation to the pandemic.

However, Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, is open to the possibility of ending Title 42 restrictions after the pandemic subsides. This move is possibly due to the pressure he’s facing from the Democrat Party.

Meanwhile, images of unaccompanied children being dumped at the border by smugglers continued to surface. They are left on parts of the border to find their own way.

As more migrants attempt to cross the border, more are left stranded in the wilderness under the scorching summer heat. Recently, Border Patrol agents encountered a U-Haul van packed with migrants.

The van had no ventilation and temperatures inside rose up to 100 degrees.

A spike in the number of drug seizures

The number of drug seizures is also up by 18% in May from April. Seizures of the deadly drug is also significantly higher. According to CPB, the seizure of the deadly drug through May of 2021 are 56% higher compared to the same month last year.

Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It used to be an opiod treatment for pain, but now, people have been using it illegally for other purposes.

According to CDC, in 2019 alone, there are over 36,000 people who died from overdosing synthethic opiods such as fentanyl.

Border Patrol agents continued to arrest gang members and sex offenders at the border together with illegal immigrants with criminal records. According to Patrol agents in the Del Rio Sector, they have witnessed a 3,166% increase in apprehension of convicted sex offenders compared to the same time last year.

Meanwhile, Republicans blamed the Biden administration for the surge of migrants and drug smuggling activities at the border. They also mentioned that the Biden administration is not acknowledging the consequences of them rolling back Trump’s immigration reforms.

The GOP lawmakers then explained that Biden should looked at the real situation at the border, instead of merely focusing on the “root causes” of the crisis in Central American countries.

This agenda is consistently pushed by the Biden administration, particularly Vice President Harris who was tapped to address the border crisis.
