Biden stated that Biden is “gravely concerned” about reports about the increasing repression of protesters. Biden said Washington was with “all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery”.

Iran claimed that the US president for “hypocrisy” in invoking human rights to apply new punishments.

“It would have been better for Mr Joe Biden to think a little about the human rights record of his own country before making humanitarian gestures, although hypocrisy does not need to be thought through,” foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani wrote via an Instagram post, as reported in Iranian media.

“The US president should be concerned about the numerous sanctions… against the Iranian nation, the sanctions whose imposition against any nation is a clear example of a crime against humanity,” He added.

The supreme Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned arch-foes Israel and Israel and the United States and Israel of encouraging the protests.

The protests “were engineered by America and the occupying, false Zionist regime, as well as their paid agents, with the help of some traitorous Iranians abroad” Khameni stated.

The turmoil has slowed diplomatic efforts to bring back a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and other major powers that were closer to an agreement in the last months, before again stalling.
