On the anniversary of the Parkland, FL high school shootings, President Joe Biden released a statement memorializing the 17 people who died in the massacre while simultaneously pulling out the Democratic Party’s favorite chestnut: A push for Ye Olde “Commonsense” gun laws.

“In seconds, the lives of dozens of families, and the life of an American community, were changed forever,” Biden said in the statement. “Over these three years, the Parkland families have taught all of us something profound. Time and again, they have showed us how we can turn our grief into purpose – to march, organize, and build a strong, inclusive, and durable movement for change.
“The Parkland students and so many other young people across the country who have experienced gun violence are carrying forward the history of the American journey,” Biden continued. “It is a history written by young people in each generation who challenged prevailing dogma to demand a simple truth: we can do better. And we will.”
With that, Biden turned his attention to the legislature.
“Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets. We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now,” the president concluded.
There is, of course, nothing “commonsense” about putting gun manufacturers on trial for crimes committed with their products. The Second Amendment explicitly states that Congress shall make no law impairing the right to bear arms. Well, if gun manufacturers can be sued out of existence every time someone decided to shoot up a school, that’s the end of the Second Amendment. No one is going to make guns if that liability immunity goes away. It’s every bit as absurd as saying that Ford can be sued if some maniac uses his Bronco to run down an innocent bystander.
As for the rest of Biden’s agenda, it’s the same old, same old that we’ve heard from the Democrats for years. “Assault weapons.” “Weapons of war.” “Background checks” (that already exist). Thankfully, unless Schumer changes his mind and opts to eliminate the filibuster, there’s very little chance that any of this will get through the Senate.

Biden has presented himself as a moderate. A unifier. But so far, his agenda – including this call for new gun laws – is every bit the product of a radical leftist ideology.
