On Thursday, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida and Democrat President Joe Biden put politics aside, amid the horrific collapse of the building in Surfside, Florida.
Partisan divide melted away on Thursday; DeSantis, one of the biggest Republican critics of the Biden administration, met with the president and sat side by side in a briefing near the site of the deadly disaster.

DeSantis thanked Biden
DeSantis also thanked Biden for recognizing the severity of the tragedy from the start and for being supportive.
The governor also praised the cooperation of the local, state, and federal authorities in managing the fallout from the collapse, saying that it “has been great”. DeSantis then told Biden these people were not only supportive at the federal level, there’s no bureaucracy in the process either.

The president responded, promising DeSantis that there will be no bureaucracy. Biden also emphasized the bipartisan strategy to the deadly tragedy, saying that they are letting the people know that they too can cooperate.
The exchanges between Biden and DeSantis offered more insight to their governing partnership, as Florida’s first responders from the Federal Emergency Management proceed with their search and rescue efforts.
In a political perspective, Biden and Desantis’ meeting was also a highly anticipated interaction.
DeSantis, a Republican governor, is a strong ally of former President Trump and ascended into office back in 2018 with Trump’s endorsement.
Recently, the governor is also gaining popularity within the Republican Party, due to his combative stance and pandemic response. Due to his moves, speculations about him running in 2024 for president are circulating.
DeSantis is also vocal about his criticism of the Biden administration on a wide range of issues. Included among them are the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border and the $1.9 stimulus package that was signed into law last March.
However, despite the political divide, signs of disagreement were set aside on Thursday; Biden and DeSantis showed solidarity amidst the disaster in Surfside, Florida.
Biden: there is no Democrat or Republican; they just want to do what is right
Biden also mentioned that DeSantis and Miami Mayor Charles Burkett have been open with him in navigating the disaster. The president also indicated that the federal government would more likely pick up 100% of the cost that is associated with the emergency response in Florida.

Biden also acknowledges in his statement the pain, anxiety, suffering, and need for psychological help in the following days and months. However, Biden vowed that help is “not going anywhere.”
The Ppesident also noted his message of unity, saying that their gathering there yesterday is to show to the people that they are there as one nation.
