Yesterday marked the start of the U.S. Senate’s impeachment trial against Donald Trump. This is the first time in history that the Senate has put a former president on trial and there still exist certain debates about whether or not this is constitutional.
Democrats are eager to make the case that Trump somehow bears responsibility for the insurrection at the Capitol last month. In the article of impeachment against the former president, Democrats and a few Republicans in the House assert that Trump incited the mob that attacked Capitol Hill.
On Tuesday, both the impeachment team and Trump’s attorneys made their opening remarks. With that said, a fresh report from Breitbart News confirms that most Americans believe Trump will ultimately be acquitted by the U.S. Senate.

The Overall Consensus of the Impeachment Trial
Per Rasmussen Reports, 64% of Americans are skeptical that the ongoing trial is going to have the outcome of a conviction. Only 11% of Americans believe Trump is likely to be convicted, whereas 5% are uncertain altogether.

72% of Republicans and 53% of Democrats stated in the survey that the 45th president will likely face acquittal. Americans also remain largely split on whether or not they will view all, some, or none of the impeachment trial.
In a survey last month, most Americans stated that the impeachment trial against Trump would only serve to further divide the country.
The Reality of Votes in the Senate
At this time, the Democrat Party holds 50 seats in the U.S. Senate. Republicans also hold 50 seats. Now, in order to convict Trump, the Senate will need to have 67 votes in support of a conviction.
Of the 50 GOP senators, 44 to 45 have already expressed opposition regarding impeachment, stating that it’s not constitutional. At the bare minimum, a conviction of Trump would mandate votes from 17 of the 50 Republicans in the Senate.

The numbers simply aren’t there and most Americans are able to recognize this. However, this isn’t stopping the Democrats from continuing ahead with the trial. Many Republicans have accused the Democrats of wasting time and devoting time and energy towards a trial that would be better spent on policy matters.
The second day of the Trump impeachment trial will commence this afternoon.
